A Few Minutes of Embarrasment May Save Your Life
Posted by: Laura Morgan at 16:44

This week Consultant Gynaecologist Paul Carter was reported in the Daily Mail as saying that he will not let his daughters wait until they are 25 to have a smear test. I understand his concerns and would encourage the NHS to look carefully at reducing the age to less than 25 for the commencement of screening.
As a clinical negligence solicitor I have seen many cases of women who are diagnose...

Greedy Lawyers?
Posted by: Julia Hurstfield at 09:48

I am sick of reading in the press and hearing on the radio comments such as `vulture culture` in terms of compensation claims directed against the NHS and how `cash rich` lawyers `milk the system` to the detriment of the NHS and the service it provides to the population of England and Wales.

It has annoyed me and irritated me more than ever today when I have just read a `Root Cause Analysi...

Breast Cancer Screening Errors
Posted by: Laura Morgan at 12:42

I was interviewed for the Radio Cumbria news today and asked to comment on the eighteen patients who were wrongly given the all-clear from breast cancer. Of course it is very encouraging that it was the Trust itself whom picked up the error from its own auditing procedure. However, it is devastating news for these women and their families who so far have been recalled and found to have cancer. R...

Posted by: Gill Edwards at 09:32

THE culling of the public body responsible for ensuring the safety of patients in our hospitals should be of grave concern to us all.

The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) is one of 10 so-called ‘arms-length bodies’ to be abolished by the new coalition government in an attempt to save the health sector around £180m, and according to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley remove ‘a needless bu...

Strokes can be prevented with the right surgery
Posted by: Gill Edwards at 15:04

I think most people assume that there is little they can do to prevent a stroke except to watch their diet and to try and live a healthy lifestyle. In fact, surgery is available and it seems that the UK is lagging behind other countries in offering this.

Some people suffer a mini-stroke (also called a Transient Ischaemic Attack or TIA) and this is a warning sign that they may be about to su...

Stillbirth deaths to be investigated
Posted by: Gill Edwards at 17:20

The new CMACE (Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries) report into Perinatal Mortality came out today. The report says that there has been a decrease in the number of stillbirths in the UK but there are around 500 stillbirths each year and some of them stem from untoward incidences occurring during delivery ie poor care. CMACE recommends that those deaths where the baby is full term and there is...
